Well, I think it's official, Spring has come. The cherry blossoms don't lie.

Frozen in Time

A creek flows into a waterfall, the splashes of water freezing on the surrounding vegetation. You see some beautiful ice formations. When I was little, the entire waterfall would freeze in this solid mass of ice. It was breathtakingly beautiful. May yet do that this year again, who knows. I was only at home long enough to catch this. Another attempt at colour, it's a little too busy but I figured why not. It's still pretty :)

Over the Bridge

Well, making a departure from my previous stint with black and white, I figured I'd post up some colour. I'm usually not happy with the way a lot of my photos come out in colour, but I like the look of this one. The lighting pleased me.

The last photo of 2008, a candle chandelier swinging in an arbor at my family home in Powell River, it sees very little use in the winter. Happy New Year :)

Bleak

I'm home for the holidays this year, first white christmas in sixteen years. The snow here falls, melts partly into slush, freezes again, and then the cycle repeats with more snow. It's magical at night when the fresh snow is falling, but then when the sun comes up, you see nothing but wet, slushy snow falling off of the tree branches it dusted with sonorous "plops." It's like perpetual spring in colder climates, that horrible time when the snow is melting and everything is wet and mucky. Makes outside seem very uninviting, and encourages you to curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book.

A while back, I picked up an older Canon Powershot A40. It didn't have the highest resolution, and it was somewhat of a challenge to get good photos out of it, but what I did get was rather rewarding. The work that went into taking photos with that camera made me appreciate them more when they came out. This is one of my initial efforts, getting used to the long exposure settings of the camera.

Charge Controller

Taken inside the structure featured in the last photo. This is a charge controller for the small room full of batteries that would have powered this structure when service was interrupted, until the generator kicked on. The last time I visited, the cover was on, but in the intervening months, someone had been and removed it. I'm of mixed feelings about this. One one hand, it's sad to think that people go in and vandalize things in abandonned places, but it's also kind of cool, because I get to peer at the innards of it, and admire the quality of construction.

Note: the EXIF data on a lot of photos from here on out will show f/0 as the aperture. My fixed 50 is an old M lens and doesn't communicate it's aperture with the body, so it won't record properly in the EXIF data.

Atop Mt. Vaca

Well, I figure that now is as good of a time as any to get "back on the horse." I've been ignoring this far too long, and figured that I either need to update, or take this down. I chose the update route. When I started this blog, I posted a picture daily. I wound up stressing out over getting a photo up every day, and wound up posting some I was less than happy with. I'm not going to make the same mistake this time, and only post things when I feel happy with them. I figure that a more relaxed attitude to posting will make it less of a chore to maintain and make me post more often.

Anyway, this is a shot of a communications tower of some sort on top of Mt. Vaca, outside of Vacaville, CA. It's one of many that dots the hillside, but it's by far the most interesting. It's long since been stripped of its equipment, and thus, I can't ascertain it's original function. It just sits there now, ghostly and abandoned.
